Keith Alexander, Legislative Council District 2

I’ve lived in Newtown since 1996; married to Elizabeth, father to Claire and Scott (Newtown schools graduates). I’m an engineer at heart, designer by trade, astrophysicist in my next life.

For the last two years, I’ve served as chairman of the Legislative Council.

I love the feeling of being nestled in this community in the hills and I want to keep that feeling alive. Newtown continues to be a quiet yet vibrant community, but that’s not easy to manage. We are constantly balancing between supporting our existing roads, programs, and buildings while ensuring that we keep a steady tax base without putting the burden solely on homeowners or local business. There are challenges to ensure open space and public facilities while keeping it all safe and accessible and we are lucky to have an array of volunteers to support organizations and town government to work through the issues. Newtown needs a Legislative Council that keeps those priorities in mind while ensuring the smooth interaction of all the groups involved.

Experience

My experience serving on both the Board of Education and the Board of Finance bring extra depth to my work on the Legislative Council. I have become practiced in approaching each issue with a broad view, to assess the details before coming to a conclusion about what I believe is best for Newtown. On the Legislative Council, I work toward policies that sustain our safe and compassionate community with an eye towards property values and educational excellence.
