“Pay-as-you-throw” — Trash disposal facts

There are a lot of questions floating around about the “pay-as-you-throw” trash program at the transfer station. Here are some quick answers:

  • Pay-as-you-throw will begin July 1, 2025
  • Residents will buy trash bags instead of paying the annual flat fee (so you pay for what you use – much like your energy bill)
  • Bulk waste and recycling are not part of this change
  • There will be different size bags (different cost per bag) to fit the garbage can you use
  • This will encourage people to recycle and compost to reduce waste

I have participated in the orange bag program since it’s inception and figure that my family would spend about $100/yr for bags – about the same as the current transfer station annual permit. In my household, we have three to five adults, a cat, and a dog, and I do a lot of gardening.
