What in your background serves you best in the office you’re running to hold?
I have worked in the C.H. Booth Library for more than three years in a number of roles, as a Reference Librarian, Newtown nonprofit council coordinator, adult programmer, and ESL teacher. This works lets me interact with far more people, with a greater range of backgrounds, than I could otherwise reach. Every person in town has different wants and needs, but I am better able to address and speak to these issues because of this experience.
What do you think are the most important traits necessary for anyone running for office to do a good job in the role of public servant?
I think a connection to reality, to what the average person needs, is the most important thing. There is a lot of privilege in politics, from the local to national level, and I think that disconnect colors legislation. I want my representative to truly represent me; I want the choices made to be in the best interest of most Americans, not just those rich and powerful enough to wield influence.
How do you work with those who don’t share your views to find common ground?
I think that, as long as the focus is on what is best for the town, and personal gain isn’t factored in, there can always be a common ground to find. Besides, you get all sorts at the library; I am used to finding the best solution, no matter what.
