Michelle Ku 2017Board of Education

I strive to bring an open mind and a balanced perspective to the Board of Education’s deliberations and actions. These will be important in the coming months and years as the Board of Education selects a new superintendent, optimizes the use of space in buildings, ensures the physical safety and mental well-being of our students and staff, and endeavors to provide a rich academic environment.

The district’s focus must be to provide the best education possible, even while addressing financial challenges. Having a voice in state-level conversations and a balance of perspectives and ideas represented on the Newtown Board of Education will be important in making sure we address these decisions in a thoughtful and effective manner. By making data-driven decisions, advocating for Newtown’s students, and encouraging a cooperative spirit, I’m confident that I can make a positive contribution as we take on these challenges and fulfill our obligation TO INSPIRE EACH STUDENT TO EXCEL.

Good schools are vital to property values and the success of the entire community. I have seen firsthand how a great public education can expand opportunities to students in science, business, engineering, vocational careers and the arts. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the work of Newtown’s Board of Education for the past four years and look forward to continuing my support of ongoing work in:

  • updated curriculum with a focus on critical thinking skills and rigor
  • conversations about education and funding at the state level
  • personalized learning through programs and curriculum such as the high school’s senior year experience, Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop, advanced and alternative math options, and focus on individual student growth
  • safe school climate, the health and well-being of students and staff, and safety and security
  • use of facilities and building space

Personal

Newtown has been home to my husband, our three children, my parents and me for eight years. In addition to nerding out on sciences, I also enjoy gardening and being around horses.
