John Fletcher for Board of Finance

I’ve lived with my family in Newtown for 19 years, with four great kids who have attended Newtown public schools. I’ve become a strong advocate for investing in education, because it benefits the students directly and because it increases the attractiveness and value of the whole community as well.  That is one of my top priorities as a Board of Finance member.

I also recognize that investment needs to be balanced with prudent management.  The Board of Finance has successfully led that balance recently, with declining tax rates for the past two years; my goal is to continue that important financial discipline and apply it to our short and long term plans.

My personal and professional background is a good fit for this role.  I have an MBA, and I have over 30 years of finance staff and management experience, primarily with IBM. I have worked extensively with executive business plans, budgets, revenue, expense, and capital investments, across a range of units and functions – and those are important skills across the multiple issues and stakeholders in Newtown’s government.

I serve on the Borough Zoning Board of Appeals, but this is my first town-wide candidacy.  It’s an honor to be running, and I believe my experience will be a valuable addition to the Board of Finance.

Brief Closing Statement

We are fortunate to live in Newtown, with its wonderful small town character, excellent amenities, and dedicated volunteers who have very effectively managed its various operations.  I would like to contribute to the town through the Board of Finance, to effectively balance prioritized investment including education, with the continued sound financial discipline we deserve.  I have good experience to fill that role, and I look forward to working with all members of our community to make Newtown even stronger.
